Hawthorns Care Centre in Peterlee, Durham passed a recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection with an overall ‘Outstanding’ rating – the best possible rating – after being praised for operating a safe, responsive, caring, effective and well-led service.
The CQC inspected the home on September 27th and 30th 2022 and, when the report was published on January 31st 2023, they rated the home, run by Barchester Healthcare, as ‘Good’ in three areas of the inspection – safe, effective and well-led and ‘Outstanding’ in the two final categories of responsive and caring, giving the home an ‘Outstanding’ overall rating. The report stated that there was an exceptionally strong and visible person-centred culture at the home and that the genuinely welcoming and inclusive conduct of the staff meant people felt relaxed and respected.
Also highlighted in the report was that staff enjoyed working at Hawthorns and that people were very happy with the care they received, felt safe and well looked after, were relaxed with staff and were treated with kindness and respect. The report stated that relatives felt that Hawthorns “really is a home away from home” and that “staff go above and beyond to ensure people receive caring support.”
One relative said: “Hawthorns have been an absolute godsend and they have given my loved one their life back, they are confident once again and feel like they have a future.” A health professional commented: “Staff at Hawthorns have a lot of experience in dealing with complex healthcare needs, they make a real effort to get things right.”
